Description:
Male turkeys have long, dark, fan-shaped tails and glossy bronze wings. As with many other Galliformes, they show strong sexual dimorphism — males are much larger and more colorful than females, with iridescent feathers in red, purple, green, copper, bronze, and gold tones.

Females (hens) have duller plumage in shades of brown and gray. Parasites can dull coloration in both sexes; in males, bright plumage often signals good health. Adults have 5,000–6,000 feathers, with white bars on the primary wing feathers. Tail feathers are uniform in adults and uneven in juveniles.

Males typically grow a “beard,” a tuft of coarse hairlike feathers about 9 inches long on the chest. Around 10–20% of females may also have a shorter, thinner beard.
